With the arrival of COVID-19 and the Pandemic earlier this year a lot more focus has been put on ways to keep the immune system boosted. In trying to achieve this goal, many people have started to consume or increased their intake of vitamins and supplements. Doing this is not a bad idea at all since most of the important minerals and vitamins you receive come from your diet, and let’s face it, we don’t all eat the healthiest. Now I’m not going to go over every vitamin or mineral that will help you boost your immune system because that could take a while. What I am going to do is talk about sea moss because I love it, and it contains 92 of the 102 minerals needed by the human body to function. I can also attest to one of the benefits of sea moss. Not to say there’s only one thing it does for me, but there is one thing I noticed right away that is very beneficial to my life. There is definitely something wonderful it does for me that those who know me personally and have been around me have seen a difference in.
WHAT IS SEA MOSS
Before we get into the wonderful benefits of sea moss, we have to talk about what it is. After all, you shouldn’t be using anything if you don’t know what it is or what it’s made of. That little tip goes for everything. Know what you’re using or digesting.
Sea moss, also called Irish moss, is a type of seaweed. It may be new to some of us as a supplement, but it is old and more common to others who have used it for ages for multiplereasons. We’ll get to that soon.
BENEFITS OF SEA MOSS
As I stated earlier, sea moss contains 92 of the 102 minerals need for the body to function. Because of this, the list of benefits can be quite extensive, and it would take forever to list all of the possible benefits of sea moss. Think about it like this. Every mineral has its own benefits. So that’s at least 92 benefits it provides! Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration because some of them overlap and work together and whatnot. But the bottom line is sea moss is wonderful. I’ll list a few of the wonderful benefits of sea moss here. P.S. I promise I tried to keep it short, but it was just so hard. It’s so many that are important and that I felt like you’d want to know.
1. Nutrients:
It’s a superfood! With all those minerals, what else could it be. We’ve already gone over that multiple times. I’m sure you get it by now. But you should keep reading 🙂
2. Immune booster:
It can be used as prevention and treatment of sickness. It also covers the “Anti- Club.” Anti-inflammatory, -aging, -bacterial, and -viral are the members of this club. As an anti- inflammatory it may provide relief for arthritis and joint pain. It may also aid in recovery for athletes. It provides potassium chloride, omega 3 fatty acids, and chlorophyll that dissolve mucus in the respiratory and lymphatic system.
3. Energizer:
It’s full of iron. Low iron equals low energy. Iodine, which it also contains, can also provide energy.
4. Natural, Healthy Weight Loss:
It contains iodine, which is needed to produce thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones control metabolism. It also contains citrulline-arginine, a compound that stimulates metabolism.
*Tip: You may want to look up citrulline and arginine. Good stuff.
5. Hair and Skin:
citrulline-arginine synthesizes collagen providing the results of healthy hair and smooth skin.
6. Plant- Based Vegan:
So I made this category a benefit to group a few individual benefits together and make it look like the list wasn’t so long lol. It’s packed with iron, which we discussed under “Energizer,” but it has to go here because plant- based vegans don’t eat meat or poultry obviously, and that is where our iron comes from. It’s also rich in protein, which is important to members of this lifestyle even though you don’t need meat to get protein, but that’s another story (I really wanted to say “that’s a whole nother story” lol) for a later date.
7. Mental Health/Mood:
The potassium component aids in various mental health complications. The B vitamin component can reduce stress
*Tip: Check out sea moss/potassium and how it affects mental health. Lots of good stuff
8. Increased Libido:
In other words, increased sex drive. This factor is due to the high levels of zinc. Had to throw this one in there because I’m sure a few of you would appreciate this tid bit of info. Citrulline and arginine found in sea moss can also possibly help erectile dysfunction due to how they work.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT SEA MOSS INTO YOUR LIFESTYLE
I was introduced to sea moss when I became plant-based vegan, more specifically, whole food, alkaline, plant-based vegan following the Dr. Sebi list. I am not currently vegan butconsidering going back due to all the wonderful health benefits. I started off using the gel, which is prepared from the dried plant. I’d drop a small scoop into whatever I was cooking or even just add it to water. That was in the beginning stages when I obviously wasn’t putting much thought into it but just trying to make sure I was consuming it. Adding it to water, in my opinion, was disgusting. Surprisingly I still drank it. Well it wasn’t that bad, but it definitely tasted like ocean water. Others describe it as “fresh-tasting” and some say they don’t really taste a difference. It also comes as capsules, tablets, and powder.
If you follow TheLuxeDoc’s Instagram or even LadyDNicole’s Instagram, my personal Instagram, you know that I have smoothies every morning and am very excited about them lol. That’s because they’re tasty and improve my whole life. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that. Of the many benefits of sea moss, the number one that I can attest to the most is ENERGY! I noticed an increase in my energy from the start. Those who know me personally know that I love to sleep. A good nap was always a good idea to me. You know how people can lay around and watch tv all day? I could sleep for most of the day. Well now, its times when I want to take a nap but can’t because I’ve had my smoothie. I’m never tired after lunch or heavy meals. The “itis” pretty much doesn’t exist for me unless it’s the weekend and I choose to brunch instead of a smoothie (I normally can’t do both because remember sea moss helps with weight loss with one of the ways being making you feel fool). Energy is definitely a life changer. I can be more productive throughout the day, which allows me to get more done and improve my LUXE life!
It can also be used as a thickening agent, replacing eggs. It can be used for baking or thickening soups and stews. Another reason vegans can appreciate this superfood. It doesn’t stop at consumption. Remember I listed hair and skin under the benefits list? Well, the gel can even be applied directly to the skin and used as a face mask or applied as a conditioner for hair. Consuming it for hair and skin benefits works also.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING SEA MOSS
Studies involving the benefits of sea moss have not used standardized forms. Keep in mind that supplements do not have to be FDA approved, meaning the Food and Drug Administration does not review them for safety and effectiveness. Variability is presented when it comes to a few things.
Digestibility and bioavailability of the nutrients isn’t well understood. In other words, how much nutrition is actually being absorbed and used (getting into the bloodstream ).
How much nutrients each plant contains based on where or how it is grown (grown in different locations). It can be farmed and pool grown or wildcrafted, which can be compared to the concept of fish being farm grown or wild caught. Contaminationcan also be a concern.
Sea moss is also a source of iodine. Iodine is an important mineral, but at the wrong amount can do damage. Iodine helps produce thyroid hormone. Because iodine helps produce thyroid hormone, and sea moss is a source of iodine, too much sea moss can lead to hyperthyroidism. Click here to see some quick facts on hyperthyroidism. Keep in mind the amount of nutrients actually absorbed from sea moss can vary. So, it is important to not overdo it. Don’t go scooping and using five tablespoons of the gel or powder supplement because of all the other great benefits. As we learned above, sea moss can be added to your diet in various ways. Be aware of how you’re using it in your diet daily. If you had it in a smoothie earlier that morning, you may not want to use it to bake a cake you’ll eat that night. Because you aren’t aware of how much is actually absorbed, it’s best to err on the side of caution caution. If you already have diagnosed hyperthyroidism, sea moss may not be a supplement or cooking aid you want to add to your diet.
Are the benefits of sea moss listed here enough to make you add it to your diet? If you find that you don’t have any conflicting issues that won’t allow you to add it, give it a try and let me know what you think! I currently use a supplement powder that contains sea moss, bladderwrack, and burdock root that you can find here —>My Sea Moss Combo Choice<— , but when I use straight sea moss I use —>Sea Moss<—. Don’t forget to let me know what you think!
