new years eve celebration

Every chapter needs an ending, right? 3 things to do to close out the year. Notice I didn’t add the adjective strong, great, or anything of that nature at the end of the title. That’s because these things should be done regardless of how you feel your year went or you finished it. These 3 things are things you can do now that will help you look backward to move forward into the new year

3 Things to do to Close Out the Year:

Close out the year
  1. Assess

Assess your current and previous goals, habits, and routines. Be sure to include the good, bad, and the ugly. Start with your goals and work your way down to the characteristics, habits, and process needed to achieve them. When revisiting the goals you set this year, compare the ones you did complete to the ones you didn’t. Why were some completed verses others? Was it due to timing, responsibilities, or managing other goals at the time? What obstacles presented, and wat helped you overcome them.

Now assess all the pieces that build the bigger picture. What characteristics were needed to achieve each of the goals? What habits were built during the process? What traits and bad habits got in your way?  On the flip side, what would you do differently and why?

Finish off your assessment with where you currently stand. What goals are still in progress and why? Are these goals that were long term and haven’t met their term end yet, or are they goals that you just didn’t get around to or even starting at all? What would you have done/will you do differently during the process of completing goals moving forward?

The answers to these questions are important because they pretty much provide the skeleton of the story of your life over the past year. Use your answers to help you plan for next year, which brings us to number two.

2. Plan

Plan for the new year. Set goals!. We’ve touched on goal planning (not setting) already in *How To: Goal Planning- A Key to Life*. Accomplishing goals takes more than just writing them down, even though that is a very important first step. You’ve got to plan them out with steps and a time frame. Create lists and come up with routines. A fun and classic way to plan, especially for the new year is by creating a vision board. These usually provide a more visual display than a traditional list. I prefer both together. One a fun to create, visual display and the other, more detailed with steps, the actual plan to achieve the visuals.

3. Start

Start now! Start before the new year. People always talk about this but don’t really understand or connect this action with the important benefit associated wit it. It’s always “get a head start.” But a head start on what? Its not a race, and you shouldn’t be in competition with anyone.

Close out the year

Starting before the new year gives room for trial and error. Try out some of those routines, and turn them into habits sooner by simply starting sooner. Fall off the wagon a couple of times if you need to, figure out why, and fix it. If you looked at it this way, you may be more likely to actually start before the new year (instead of just talking about it) or start at all. Perfection isn’t the goal, but starting the new year off with less hiccups because you worked through a few of them before the new year actually started, will give you a boost in confidence and a little more incentive to keep at it.

Assess, plan, and start now to prepare for a great new year!

Now that we’ve discussed the 3 things to do to close out the year, purchase your *LUXE Journal*. It’s the tool you need to help you level up your life and prepare for the new year. Use it for all things goals: goal setting, planning, and tracking. It’s also great for creating lists, journaling, and writing out ideas.
